There are various licensing categories that cover the commercial vehicles. LGV refers to both large and light goods vehicles. There are four license categories available for drivers wishing to obtain LGV licenses. These are:
1. Category C1
This is the lowest class and is reserved for drivers operating small box trucks or transit vans. They are, however, not allowed to tow a trailer behind their vehicles.
1. Category C1 + E
This allows drivers to operate vehicles ranging from 3.5 to 7.5 tonnes. These drivers are also allowed to tow trailers of more than 750kgs behind their vehicles. Vehicles under this category may include small tipper trucks with a standard chassis or utility trailers.
1. Category C
This allows drivers to operate heavy rigid body box trucks, bin lorries, tipper trucks and articulated lorries. This is the most widely held LGV license.
1. Category C + E
This allows drivers to operate the heaviest and largest goods vehicles as well as construction equipment.
